A few words about the HSPN
The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), founded in 1951, is the first environmental NGO in Greece, and through its actions and initiatives it pursues the protection and sustainable management of the Greek natural heritage.
It initiated the establishment of National Parks and Protected Areas, and the modernization of environmental legislation, and the protection of habitats and endangered species of fauna and flora.
The HSPN represents the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in Greece and is the national operator in Greece of all FEE’s international programmes. It is a member of important international environmental organizations, such as the IUCN and MIO.
Since 2021, it has aligned its strategy with FEE’s new strategy, GAIA 20:30, to address the three burning and interconnected problems facing the planet today: climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution.
The five main areas in which the HSPN is currently active are: Environmental Intervention, Nature Conservation Projects and Programmes, Environmental Education, Sustainable Management in the tourism sector and Public Awareness..
For its work, it has received awards from the Academy of Athens, the Council of Europe and the Ford Foundation.
