Forest Fire Prevention

As early as 2017, the HSPN took an initiative for the Prevention of Forest Fires by carrying out, in a responsible and consistent way, plentiful actions aimed at taking all the necessary preventive measures against the catastrophic forest fires.

One of the consequences of climate change is that the heat-waves incidents are about to increase in frequency, intensity and duration. This fact, combined with the changes in forest management and land use in Greece, leads inevitably to larger, and more “difficult” to deal with, forest fires, which will be dangerous for both the nature and the humankind. What is required of us now, is to start taking mostly preventive measures, rather than investing in repression and rehabilitation.

The initiative of the HSPN for the Prevention of Forest Fires consists of many programs, projects, actions and sub-actions. It is addressed to all of us: the authorities, experts, citizens, the student community and it is ultimately aimed at future generations and the Greek nature.

The initiative started after the disastrous fire of Kythera Island in 2017, under the integrated program "The Trip for the Regeneration of Kythera has started...". A series of projects and actions followed, starting from Kythira (2019), Boeotia and Phocis (2021), to Ilia (2022) and horizontally throughout the whole region of Greece.
