The 2nd Training of Trainers (ToT) of the Interreg NEXT BSB EOL project (Environmental and Ocean Literacy in the Black Sea Basin) was successfully completed.
From 26 to 29 May 2025, more than 35 trainers and trainees from environmental organizations, civil society groups, local authorities, and academic institutions from Greece, Türkiye, and Bulgaria gathered in the city of Burgas for the four-day seminar.
The main goal of the seminar was to inform participants about key issues related to ocean literacy, with a particular focus on the importance of the Black Sea region. Through presentations, discussions, and hands-on activities, participants deepened their understanding of environmental and marine concepts, the flora and fauna of the Black Sea, and the environmental pressures facing the region. They were also prepared to act as ambassadors of this knowledge and to help raise awareness among young people aged 18 to 35 who live and work along the Black Sea coast.
The Black Sea is a vital source of life for millions of people living in its vicinity and attracts a significant number of visitors. Its existence is crucial for the environment, society, and economy of all countries surrounding it.
During the training, we had the opportunity to visit Lake Atanasovsko (Атанасовско), a key natural site in northern Burgas that hosts a wide range of plant and animal species, especially birds. We also explored the Cultural and Ethnographic Complex of Chengene Skele (Ченгене Скеле), where we experienced the coastline, local heritage, and traditional fishing practices of the region.
This four-day experience served not only as a platform to exchange ideas, knowledge, and team-building skills, but also to lay the foundation for strong connections based on shared values and interests.
The EOL Training of Trainers seminars are co-organized by the project’s three partners: Yuva Derneği (Türkiye), the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, and Green Balkans (Bulgaria). The journey continues with excitement, as we now prepare to share our knowledge and experiences through the project’s upcoming educational meetings.
