The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature was responsible for coordinating the relay in Greece from the 24th tol the 27th of October 2022.

The route in Greece covered 755 km. The baton crossed the border from Albania by solar boat at the Lake Megali Prespa and continued on secondary roads in most areas excluding Attica, towards:

Kastoria – Kleisoura – Ptolemaida – Akrini – Veroia – Trilofo – Katerini – Platamonas – Gonnoi – Rodia – Larissa – Farsala – Domoko – Lamia – Kamena Vourla – Agios Konstantinos – Skala – Martino – Akraifnio – Aliarto – Thiva – Oinofyta – Avlona – Afidnes – the Marathon Dam and Marathon. It then followed the official Marathon Route – to Akropoli – and thence to the Flisvos Marina, Faliro, from where it sailed to Cyprus.

The mass participation of runners and cyclists, the engagement of citizens of all ages in the parallel events throughout the route and the coverage by national and local media that embraced the initiative, contributed to an increase of awareness and of public understanding about the challenges of climate change, as well as about important climate initiatives and actions all over Greece. Through the collaborative effort of the participants and our supporters and sponsors, we managed to establish Greece as one of the most important parts of this global initiative. For more details about the route and the parallel events please see here and for the important points here.

The event was actively supported by central government entities, the regional governments and municipalities, the educational community including pupils, teachers and parents, businesses, non-governmental organizations, the Hellenic Police, the Fire Department, national sports associations and clubs, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Olympic medalists and athletes and members of the civil society.

The relay was an example of extraordinary cooperation among all involved parties, making it a symbol of cooperation and promoting the message for quality environmental education for all, clearly and loudly.

Running Out of Time was made possible thanks to a great many partners and supporters in the 18 countries. In Greece the event was sponsored by:
