Complaint to the European Commission about the new law threatening Natura 2000 sites

In a letter to the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, 13 environmental NGOs from Greece have complained of a series of breaches of EU nature legislation, by the new Law 4782/2021, passed by the Greek Parliament last week.

In their letter, the environmental NGOs list a number of infringements of Article 6 of Directive 92/43/EEC concerning the protection of biodiversity and the establishment of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. They point out that Article 218 of the law of the Ministry of Development comes to aggravate an already bad situation of the implementation of the country's obligations towards EU nature legislation. The recent condemnation of Greece by the EU Court for a very serious delay in the adoption of protection measures for the Natura 2000 Network areas, the recent EU pilot request for a series of violations of Article 6 (3) of the aforementioned Directive and now the unacceptable Article 218 of Law 4782/2021, indicate an ever-deteriorating state of national biodiversity protection.

29,630 citizens and dozens of environmental organisations are calling for the withdrawal of Article 219 of the bill of the Ministry of Development, which paves the way for reduced protection of Natura 2000 areas, aiming to facilitate investment projects.

In just 5 days, 29,630 citizens united their voice against the unacceptable provision of the bill that is being discussed by the plenary of the Hellenic Parliament.

Also, after a letter of 23 organizations to the Nature 2000 Commission, which is the central scientific advisory body of the state for biodiversity, the Commission isseued a notice for the withdrawal of article 219 of the bill of the Ministry of Development and Investment for public procurement.

In an open letter, 29 organisations make a final appeal to the Prime Minister of Greece to intervene in the withdrawal of Article 219.

If the government insists on keeping the Article in the bill, the organisations ask MPs to vote against it.

World Wildlife Day, March 3, is dedicated to wild fauna and flora. This year, again, it is celebrated with many environmental problems, globally and locally.

And yet, the case of Mt. Kallidromo shows us that there are also positive examples. Kallidromo recently acquired legal protection by a new Ministerial Decision following work carried out with the synergy of several stakeholders in the framework of the LIFE ForOpenForests project managed by HSPN. This small mountain of Roumeli (Central Greece), has important flora, impressive landscapes, and remarkable birdlife. It is also a model of how traditional human activities, such as transhumance stockbreeding and beekeeping, can coexist with valuable biodiversity.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, at the HSPN we honor world wildlife day; and we see in Mt. Kallidromo the culmination of many years of efforts, both by scientists and the local community, and a vision for the Greek Nature and its protected areas.

Panagiotis S. Economidis, Emeritus Professor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and internationally renowned Ichthyologist, has passed away. He left a great legacy with his extensive research and teaching work.

To his honour, his name has been given to three freshwater fish, endemics of Greece: The Trichonis Blenny (Salaria economidisi), the Western Greece Goby, or Economidis Goby (Economidichthys pygmaeus) and the Trichonis Dwarf Goby (Economidichthys trichonis). The latter is considered to be the smallest freshwater fish in Europe - mature at 1.8cm and attaining a maximum length of 3cm.

P.S. Economidis was a former member of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, and has written several articles for the magazine "Nature" (Fysi). We extend our sincerest condolences to his family.
